Linden Park at MLK Ave and S. Camilla Street
Hosted by MMDC, University of Memphis Design Collaborative, IRIS Orchestra, Peabody Vance Neighborhood Association, and City View Towers
Join us to celebrate the recent streetscape enhancements on MLK Avenue, explore park improvement ideas, and experience a special music and art performance with the Peabody Vance neighborhood community.
MMDC partnered with the City of Memphis on the redesign of MLK Avenue from Peabody Avenue to Fourth Street to create a safer and more accessible street for all users. The project includes a variety of safety features, including dedicated bike lanes, narrowed vehicular travel lanes, high visibility crosswalks, pedestrian bump outs and a traffic diverter at Linden Park. The project corridor also includes additional amenities like bike racks, bike repair stations, benches and trash and recycling receptacles.
The event at Linden Park will kick off with an "Act of Spontaneous Creation." Iris musician and violin professor from the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music (RESSOM) at the University of Memphis, Marcin Arendt, and celebrated local Memphis artist, Jamond Bullock, will collaborate to create a multimedia experience combining music and visual art in real-time. Attendees will then be encouraged to create their own works of art as they listen to an eclectic mix of music performed by a string quartet made up of local players including Iris Orchestra's Artist Fellows and musicians as well as Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music string students.
This event will also celebrate the culmination of a semester-long project conducted by the University of Memphis Design Collaborative (UMDC), a partnership between the School of City and Regional Planning and the School of Architecture. Students will share ideas for future park enhancements, informed by park users and precedent research, aimed at improving the park's functionality and creating a welcoming public space accessible to all users.
